NEW! Now with interdisciplinary first semester project and exercises in all economics lectures
Industrial engineers work on tasks that lie at the intersection of economics and engineering. They help to ensure that technical problems are also tackled from an economic point of view and that economic problems are solved taking technological constraints into account. They are particularly important in the management of the effective and efficient use of resources in industry, in the design of systemic solutions and as a link between technical and commercial business areas.
Job profile and labor market
For decades, industrial engineering has been one of the courses of study with the highest growth rates in Germany. The increasing proportion of industrial value added, which is generated in interdisciplinary projects, and current challenges in the manufacturing industry and the raw materials and energy sector are leading to an unbroken high demand for industrial engineers on the job market, offering graduates excellent career prospects. Successful completion of the Bachelor's degree course enables entry into positions where basic engineering and economic expertise is required. Graduates of the postgraduate Master's degree course, in which students are introduced to the current state of research and develop their own profile through individual specialization, have excellent entry and career opportunities.
Exemplary fields of activity for Bachelor graduates:
- Purchasing
- Production management
- Work preparation
- logistics
- controlling
- Project Management
- Technical sales
- Quality management and maintenance
What makes the degree program in Clausthal special
The Clausthal Bachelor's degree course in Industrial Engineering places great emphasis on a broad basic education in engineering and economics, which does not focus on ephemeral factual knowledge, but on methodological skills and the ability to abstract. This enables graduates to perform tasks at the interface between technology and business, regardless of a specific industry, and to find their way as generalists in both areas without having to commit themselves to one field of study as early as the Bachelor's degree course. In addition to the excellent supervision, the course is also characterized by the high value placed on course-related exercises and the integration of important framework science and interdisciplinary courses.
Structure of the study program
From the first semester onwards, the contents of the engineering and economics courses are taught in equal measure. In both areas, all essential basic subjects for industrial engineers are covered. In addition, further important skills are taught in a seminar and in modules on computer science, business English, scientific work and law. The compulsory elective subjects can be chosen from an extensive catalog of engineering and economics courses. The degree program concludes with the Bachelor's thesis, which can be completed at one of the institutes at Clausthal University of Technology or in cooperation with an industrial company or a non-university research institution.
- Modules on the fundamentals of mathematics and chemistry
- Modules on quantitative methods and programming
- Business administration modules on all essential functional theories
- Economics modules on microeconomics and macroeconomics
- Engineering modules on essential basic subjects
- Engineering modules on important application subjects
- Framework science modules on business informatics and law
- Instruction in scientific work, business English and seminar
- Compulsory elective subjects
- Bachelor's thesis
Industrial internship
Part of the degree program is a practical work placement of 8 weeks, which must be completed as a commercial and/or technical pre-study internship. This means that the internship must have been completed before the start of the degree course, but at the latest by the end of the third semester.
