Business Informatics * (Master)

Information systems is the science of the design, development and application of computer-aided information and communication systems and techniques to support business processes in companies and administrations. Business informatics performs an interface function between computer science, which is often technically oriented, and application-oriented business administration. Its interdisciplinary character is reinforced by the inclusion of labor science, psychological, sociological and mathematical-technical aspects. [According to: Gabler Wirtschaftslexikon]

Job profile and labor market

The digitalization of our society is on everyone's lips, from the digital factory to the digital energy transition and sustainable mobility. Business IT specialists are the experts for digitalization, as they combine sound technical knowledge (e.g. programming, software engineering, data analysis, artificial intelligence, human-machine interaction or IT security) with equally sound knowledge of business management consequences and questions of the organizational integration of technologies into an overall socio-economic system.

The challenges facing our society in the context of the digitalization of processes and products mean excellent long-term employment and development prospects for business IT specialists in industry and administration as well as in the service sector.

Typical job profiles include activities in

  • Design, development and implementation of business application and communication systems,
  • Introduction, re-engineering and optimization of business processes and organizational concepts,
  • working out new methods for the development of information systems,
  • performing management tasks for IT departments, specialist departments, projects or for IT companies and consulting firms.

What makes the degree program in Clausthal special

The Business Informatics course is characterized by a computer science-oriented profile: In addition to the technical and methodological foundations of economics, you will acquire a very solid education in current core areas of computer science. It is precisely this knowledge that makes our graduates so sought-after in industry! For students interested in research, we offer the Research Track, a variant of the curriculum in which you carry out a one-semester research project in preparation for a possible doctorate. You will also benefit from excellent supervision, short distances and direct contact to professors, as well as low living costs at Clausthal University of Technology.

Structure of the study program

The four-semester course combines the "three pillars" of business informatics: computer science, business informatics in the narrower sense and economics. In each of the three areas, you can choose courses from a catalog of compulsory electives depending on your area of interest. You can choose between different specializations, e.g. Information Systems Engineering, Operations Research & Management, or Intelligent Interactive Information Systems. Through projects, seminars and courses on research methodology, you will acquire in-depth specialist and methodological knowledge and skills in preparation for your Master's thesis, career or doctorate.
